We’re also proud to announce that we’ll be hosting a workshop with Ellen Close on June 25 at 6 pm, Beyond Art For Art’s Sake:

Are you interested in using art to help or change your community? To explore big social or political issues? In working with marginalized groups or telling ‘untold stories?’ At this event, you’ll start to wrestle with the ethical and practical considerations of creating work for, about and with different community members by digging into some scenarios with fellow emerging artists. This discussion will be hosted by Ellen Close, Artistic Producer of Downstage, a Calgary theatre company that produces plays that creates conversation around social issues.

The workshop is open to and appropriate for artists of all disciplines.

Ellen is an actor, playwright and the Artistic Producer of Downstage. As a member of the Downstage Creation Ensemble, she has co-created and performed plays that explored questions of geo-engineering and ocean health (In the Wake), consumer debt (Bust) and the relationship between oil & gas and agriculture in Alberta (Good Fences); all three shows were nominated for Betty Mitchell Awards for Outstanding New Play, with In the Wake receiving the award. With Col Cseke, she created and facilitated the Magpie Treasure Talks, expert talks on unexpected topics with participants who had experienced homelessness and clients from the Women’s Centre; she was also a co-facilitator of The Eviction of Stuart Block at the This Is My City Festival. With her collaborator Braden Griffiths, she wrote and performed My Family and Other Endangered Species which deals with eco-anxiety among youth and has been performed at Downstage, Vertigo’s Y Stage Series and was recently published by Playwrights’ Canada Press.
