[one_half] Mel Vee mesmerizes, captivates and incites with her spoken word. She is a passionate advocate for the power of narrative to heal and liberate. Generally a shit-disturber, Mel Vee seeks to blur and disrupt all kinds of distinctions. She is a core member of the Uproot YYC, a grassroots collective for artists of colour dedicated to uprooting systemic barriers in the arts community. She was a member of Calgary’s 2017 slam team, who were semi-finalists at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word and co-creator of The Unlearning Channel podcast. [/one_half]

[one_half] Sabrina Naz: Sabrina Naz – Comanescu is a dynamic member of the Calgary dance community through her work as an instructor, performer, choreographer and filmmaker. As a performer, Comanescu has worked with the House of Dangerkat, The Bad Girls Club YYC, ILLFX Entertainment and is currently a dancer with the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks professional company. She is also the current major force behind The Diversity Performing Arts Club of Calgary that “celebrates cultural diversity while promoting inclusion and respect for all children and youth”. As well as the founder and artistic director of Casa De Naz (CDN). An art collective which she established in 2012 to, “excite and educate art hubs across Canada about the thriving Caribbean community in Calgary and the arts of the Caribbean as a whole”. [one_half] Janelle Schiffner: Janelle Schiffner has been dancing for over 20 years, training at various schools around Calgary. She is a graduate from the University of Calgary, receiving a Bachelor’s of Art in Contemporary Dance with a Concentration in Choreography and Performance. Janelle has participated in dance travel studies around the world, including New York City, Cuba, and Amsterdam. Janelle studied jazz at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks with their Professional Training Program and continues to share her love of jazz dance with students around the city. Janelle loves immersing herself in many projects within the community, and opportunity to both perform and choreograph for IGNITE! in past years. Flight, Flight, Freeze Choreographed by Amy Badry In the aesthetic of hip hop and other street style dances, this piece explores the roles and rituals that evolve in environments of stress.
[one_half] Amy Badry (Choreographer): Amy is teacher, performer and choreographer based out of Calgary, AB. She has a Minor of Dance from the University of Calgary, and has since continued her training in Hip Hop, House and Funk styles, traveling to New York and Los Angeles to learn from many of the pioneers and creators of these dances. Amy currently teaches at Pulse Studios, as well as facilitates dance workshops in the community for mixed ability dancers. Other than her performances in university productions such as Dance at Night, Mainstage, Montage, and Dance at Noon. Warren has also performed for Cirque Du Soleil in the opening ceremonies for the Pan Am Games in 2014. Her other major artistic achievement has been working for Gros Morne Summer Music in two accredited productions over the past three years. Warren is eager to be making her way to Vancouver in August to pursue her interest in contemporary/hip-hop fusion. [/one_half]

[one_half] Jon Jeffrey: At an early age Jon caught the performance bug, poorly tapping a beat to bah-bah-black sheep at this grade 1 spring concert. Though reviews were tepid, the audience reaction was palpable and Jon knew he wanted to do more. Later in life Jon would pick up a guitar and start writing songs, producing 4 of his own albums. He has performed across the country at bars, town halls and campfires, usually making enough money for the gas back home. In 2017, Jon signed up for classes with the Kinkonauts as a means to improv his musical performance, he has since joined the company as a member of the Short Stacks short form group. [/one_half]

[one_half] Pol Subirana: Pol started his life in Barcelona (Spain) and has no clue where it will end. In the middle of his 30s crisis he became a nomad and moved to Calgary to get some fresh air. As a 2017 NYE resolution he decided to come out of the improv closet and take some classes with the Kinkonauts. As last, he has found his true self and his spirit animal, a Japanese dancing cat named Kiki. Now you can see him perform with Short Stacks, Rogue Vocals, and any other project he can get his hands on. You will also find him sitting in the audience of many other improv shows. [/one_half]

She is currently working towards a BFA in Dance at The University of Calgary where she has the privilege to work with professional choreographers and her peers. [one_half] Emily Losier: Emily Losier is an emerging choreographer and dancer currently completing the University of Calgary’s BFA program. She has worked with companies including W&M Physical Theatre, Ember Dance Company, and Trip the Light Dance Company. Returning to the IGNITE! Festival for her second year, she has begun to investigate the possibilities of dance in an interdisciplinary setting. [/one_half]

[one_half] Katharina Schier(Choreographer): Born in Germany, raised in Calgary AB, Katharina Schier has participated in prestigious training programs throughout Canada. Upon obtaining her BFA in Dance from The Boston Conservatory (Boston, MA) Katharina went on to dance with various companies including Lorraine Chapman The Company, Luminarium Dance Company, Tony Williams Dance Company and most recently Dancers Studio West. Her work has been performed in Boston, Vancouver and NYC. Katharina is honored to continue to contribute her passion and experience to the Calgary dance community. www.katharinaschier.com [/one_half]

[one_half] Christina Robertson: Christina grew up in Calgary and started dancing at the age of 5, when her mom enrolled her in ballet to “get it out of her system”. Needless to say, she doesn’t foresee dance being “out of her system” for a long time. Christina spends her “spare time” working for a local home builder during the day, teaching piano and teaching dance. She is a company member with Trip the Light Dance and Performing Company and has danced with numerous companies throughout Calgary, including En Corps Dance Collective, Jeunesse Classique Ballet, Sparq Productions and with the University of Calgary’s Dance Montage. [one_half] Megan Muckle: Megan have been living and dancing in Calgary her whole life. She has recently started to transition to the teaching at McDonald Wilson Dance Academy where she continues to take classes. Megan also performs with Trip the Light Dance Company and McDonald Wilsons Professional Development Division. This is her first year in the Ignite! festival and she is excited to be here! [/one_half]
