IGNITE! Theatre Series

CURATOR: Charles Netto

All That’s Left

by Laura Couch

Six people trapped in a nightclub, with fear and darkness outside. This is a story of optimism and the human capacity for hope and strength. Inspired by recent events in Orlando, All That’s Left aims to give hope to those feeling scared or isolated.

Body so Fluorescent

by David di Giovanni in collaboration with Amanda Cordner

What happened last night on the dance floor? Two friends try to retrace their steps from the night before to figure out just how it all ended in an explosive fight. In their effort to figure out last night’s facts, both friends shift from self to alter-ego, and along the way, are met with stunning revelations. BODY SO FLUORESCENT is inviting and outrageous: asking difficult questions about blackness, otherness and relational oppressions.

Double Bill

A Millennial’s Guide to Dating in the 21st Century by AJ Baragar & Erin Watson

Whether it’s how to begin dating, what it means to be sexually active, or breaking up, this guide has you completely covered. We take the audience through a set of chapters outlining the best way to find one’s “future soulmate.” Through clever monologues and zany actions, you experience the ridiculousness, the heart-warming moments, and the harsh reality of modern dating.

AND

#JustGirlyThings by Samantha Ketsa and Emily Sunderland

#JustGirlyThings looks at the impact on the perspectives and connections of young women in the digital age. Inspired by a distinct need to release twenty years of repressed rage, Ketsa and Sunderland have collaborated with seven emerging performers to create a visceral performance that comments on how…

Um…

Never mind, it’s fine. No, seriously, everything is perfect. See you at the show. 🙂

Harun

by Makram Ayache

As Harun and his friends finalize preparations for a protest against a major pipeline project, Harun is struck with a prophecy. A dystopian future awaits him, and a masked Angel says “listen to the answer from the highest of holies…should you fail, this is the future you inherit.” Reality blurs with spiritual revelation in this tale of an immigrant Arab-Canadian navigating his sexuality in Canada.

Functional

by Louise Casemore, presented with Defiance Theatre

SPECIAL OFFSITE PRESENTATION

The MicroMech boardroom.

201-1950 10 Ave SW

What would you give up to gain something you’re not sure you need?

Functional explores the reality of people who need help but will never ask for it. From happy hour cocktails to bonding over beers to good day/bad day/bored day/days-that-end-in-Y-days, there is a cultural embrace towards the use of substances as life’s new mandatory coping mechanism. Servers, lawyers, retail employees, pilots, moms, students, artists, telephone marketing specialists – It’s about you. And me. And them. And us. You know, the ones who are doing fine.

Located in a nondescript room in inner-city Calgary, Functional uses the format of a support group to examine those struggling with the part between the beginning and rock bottom.

Based on dozens of interviews, hands-on research, and personal experience, Functional is an immersive piece from the award-winning Defiance Theatre inviting guests to observe, share, witness, or ignore.

No two shows are ever the same, seating is extremely limited.

IGNITE! Dance Series

CURATOR: Pam Tzeng

The Light at End of the Tunnel, Choreographer: Janelle Schiffner Light has given rise to many positive outcomes, but has also limited us. Light defines space and time. Shadow depicts a mirror image of the subject. Simultaneously, they exist one next to the other in both space and time. The dimensions of a shadow can expand proportionally faster than the object’s own rate of movement.

The invention of the light bulb provided society with longer work hours, increasing productivity over time but also stress. This energy source augmented a sense of control over the population. This control encouraged the rate at which the speed of light could be influence. The light bulb, itself, also inspired a larger spectrum of color, bringing greater essence to life that already existed.

Tunnel, Choreographers: Chantal Wall & Eric Osborne
A tunnel opens up as the underworld leaks out into the human world through absurd and seemingly insignificant events. The fates measure and divide while we are faced with our demons.

“Suddenly the earth yawned and opened wide with gulf immeasurable… and forth leapt a savage cohort of ghosts: forms which spawn and lurk midst the eternal shade.” – Seneca

I am Intrinsic, Choreographer: Kyra Newton
Breathing is an essential part of our everyday life and yet is often ignored. Movement that originates from the breath requires more from the mover and in turn establishes a deeper dialogue between the two. This piece explores multiple forms of breath related to our experiences as human beings, the dancers unravel the variety of patterns and emotions attached to an inhale and exhale.

Averting East, Choreographer: Alen Chaudhry
This work takes inspiration from a personal adventure where an identity, coerced subliminally from birth, is one that no longer applies to the individual and is no longer desired. Conscious in every respect, this identity shift encounters difficulties and consequences both anticipated and unexpected.
