About Us

Bold. Intimate. Thoughtful.

Sage Theatre takes you on a bold, intimate, thoughtful journey exploring the human condition. We showcase talented Albertan artists and provide a platform for artistic growth and achievement.

Sage Theatre was founded in 1998 under the artistic leadership of Rob Moffat. Sage Theatre quickly established a presence as an innovative and risk-taking theatre company. Rob Moffat remained with the company until 2004, with Kelly Reay taking over during an extremely productive decade. In 2015, Jason Mehmel became Artistic Director and Sage’s brand of bold, intimate and thoughtful theatre continues.

Production highlights include awards winning productions of Lion in the Streets, Trainspotting, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, The Dazzle and Polygraph. We were proud to produce the Canadian premiere of My Name is Rachel Corrie in 2007, and the world premiere of Meg Braem’s Blood: A Scientific Romance in 2011.

We produced the Canadian premiere of King Kirby in 2016.

This was followed by more world premieres: Natalie Meisner’s Legislating Love in 2018, Clem Martini’s Cantata (Rumours of My Crazy, Useless Life), and Javier Vilalta’s translation of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, both in 2022.

Legislating Love played to sold out audiences in Calgary, won the Heritage Calgary Lion Award, was selected and produced as part of the Alberta Queer Calendar Audio Project, toured to The Dublin International Gay Theatre Festival where it won the “Oscar” (Wilde) Award for best script and has also been published in book form by the University of Calgary Press with a critical introduction by the team.

In 2005, Sage Theatre founded the Ignite! Festival for Emerging Artists. The festival provides an opportunity for young artists to showcase and develop their skills, while giving audiences an entertaining and engaging sneak peak of the artists who will populate Canada’s performing arts scene for years to come. In nearly twenty years of the festival, we have produced dozens of new one-act plays and dance performances, and have played a part in launching hundreds of careers in the arts.

Here’s a peek at some of our past work!
